Puran Purush Yogiraj Shyamacharan Lahiri, also known as Lahiri Mahasaya, was a 19th century Indian yogi and guru who revived the ancient practice of Kriya Yoga. He is regarded as one of the greatest spiritual masters of India and the world, and his life and teachings have inspired millions of seekers across generations.

Lahiri Mahasaya was born on September 30, 1828 in Ghurni, Bengal (now in West Bengal, India). His parents were Muktakeshi Devi and Gaur Mohan Lahiri. He was married to Kashimani Devi and had five children. He worked as an accountant in the Military Engineering Department of the British Indian Government in Varanasi. He lived a simple and humble life as a householder, while secretly practicing and teaching Kriya Yoga to sincere seekers.
Lahiri Mahasaya attained the highest state of samadhi or superconsciousness, and demonstrated various miraculous powers such as healing, bilocation, telepathy, and materialization. He was revered by people of all religions and backgrounds, and was known for his compassion, wisdom, and humility. He left his physical body on September 26, 1895 in Varanasi.
There are several books written on the life and teachings of Lahiri Mahasaya, but one of the most authentic and comprehensive sources is Puran Purush Yogiraj Shri Shyamacharan Lahiri. This book is based on 26 confidential diaries written by Lahiri Mahasaya himself, which contain his personal experiences, insights, instructions, and revelations. The book was compiled and edited by his great-grandson Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee, who is also a Kriya Yoga master and founder of Yogiraj Shyamacharan Sanatan Mission.
