Episode 8: The One With The Giant Poking Device

Still in shock by what he saw in the previous episode, Joey and Monica reveal to the group that he witnessed Janice kissing her ex-husband. Joey tries not to tell Chandler about it, but when he sees him considering buying pearls for Janice's birthday, he can't hold it any longer. Chandler confronts Janice, who admits to having kissed her ex-husband at least twice. She also claims to be in love with both men, but can't bring herself to choose one. After talking to Joey, Chandler tells Janice he doesn't want to be the reason for splitting up a family. He soon changes his mind; nonetheless, she leaves to be with her ex-husband.

Episode 8: The One With the Giant Poking Device

Phoebe is reluctant to go to the dentist as she thinks it's a fatal mistake - to others, because every time she visits, someone she know dies. Her tooth is in too much pain for her to bear it anymore, so she goes to the dentist. When she comes back, she starts calling everyone she knows to check if they're still alive. When Joey points out how Ugly Naked Guy is unusually still, she thinks the curse killed him. After Joey constructs a giant poking device with chopsticks, the guys poke all the way from Monica's apartment to Ugly Naked Guy's. Phoebe is overjoyed to see that he's still alive.

Phoebe: (About Ugly Naked Guy) He's alive! He's a-live!Monica: And yet, we're still poking him.Joey: Okay, retract the device, retract the device.Ross: He does not look happy.Rachel: Hey, now he's showing us his poking device.Joey: Hey, that's never gonna make it all the way over here, buddy!

  • Tropes Armor-Piercing Question: A back-and-forth, with Chandler asking the tough questions and Janice providing the tough responses (albeit mainly by shaking her head or nodding until the last exchange).Chandler: I'm gonna need an actual answer here, so which is it: him or me? Janice: [beat] I don't know.

  • Babysitting Episode: Monica and Rachel are tasked by Ross to take care of Ben for a bit. Things go a bit awry when Monica accidentally causes Ben to hit his head.

  • Big "OMG!": Played for laughs by Monica when Ben starts saying, "Monica bang," in response to what happened. She does it again when Ross tricks her into thinking Ben sustained brain damage.

  • Played for drama by (ironically enough) Janice when Chandler confronts her about kissing her ex-husband.

  • Clothing-Concealed Injury: Monica accidentally causes Ben to bump his head. She and Rachel attempt to conceal it from Ross by putting a hat on Ben.

  • Everyone Has Standards: Joey says that if he was in Chandler's position, he'd step back and give a couple with a child the chance to mend their relationship.

  • The Faceless: This is the first of only two times the audience gets a glimpse of Ugly Naked Guy; here, only his belly and hand are shown through the window.

  • False Cause: The reason Phoebe doesn't want to go to the dentist is because every time she has, someone she knows has died. When she finally goes and everyone is still alive, Phoebe thinks the curse is broken... and then they glance across the street and notice that Ugly Naked Guy isn't moving.Ross: Pheebs, come on, you didn't kill anybody, these people just happened to die when you went to the dentist. It's just a coincidence. Phoebe: Well tell that to them. Oh! You can't, they're dead.

  • Flat "What": Chandler's reaction to Joey telling him about seeing Janice kiss her ex-husband.

  • The Gadfly: Upon hearing from Rachel that Ben bumped his head, Ross messes with Monica by suggesting that Ben seems to have sustained brain damage, causing Monica to have a near breakdown.

  • Harmful to Minors: Parodied. To keep Ross from seeing the bump on Ben's head, Monica thinks to cover it up with a hat from one of the kid's toys. In trying to remove the hat, though, she rip's the toy's head right off and in front of a clearly confused child.Rachel: Ohhh, it's like a bloodbath in here today!

  • Hyperventilation Bag: When apologizing to Chandler, Janice starts hyperventilating, so he gets her a bag. While peppered with questions, she ends up having to shake or nod her head while breathing into the bag.

  • Laser-Guided Karma: Ross pays for his prank on Monica when she chases him around the living room and he hits his own head on another beam.Rachel: (heading into her room) I'll get the hat!

  • Mood Whiplash: The scene of Chandler confronting Janice ends with Phoebe (having been calling to check on her loved ones) rushing in and then yelling at him to answer his phone next time.

  • Chandler offers a dignified speech about backing off, and Janice gives him an emotional goodbye by describing him as like a soulmate. Chandler immediately backtracks on what he said, as well as makes a scene by refusing to let go of her and claiming she can't leave because he stole one of her shoes.

  • Not Helping Your Case: When Chandler confronts Janice about what Joey seeing her with her ex-husband.Janice: At the park? Chandler: No, in his office. How many kisses were there?!

  • Parent with New Paramour: The concern over this is what ultimately convinces Chandler to break it off with Janice. After his parents got divorced, Chandler's father eventually got together with another man, who Chandler says was a generally Nice Guy but still someone he deeply resented and blamed for his parents not being together.

  • Shoot the Messenger: When pressed about what he would do in Chandler's position, Joey says he'd back off. As Chandler is angrily playing darts at the moment, Joey immediately hits the floor in response to his shocked reaction.

  • What the Hell, Hero?: Rachel does not approve of Ross putting Monica through emotional duress regarding Ben.Rachel: I hope it's still funny when you're in hell.

  • It's off-screen, but based on the group's reactions, Ugly Naked Guy did not appreciate them waking him with a giant poking device.Rachel: Hey, hey, now he's showin' us his poking device. Joey: Hey, that's never gonna make it all the way over here, buddy!

The third season of Friends, an American sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, premiered on NBC on September 19, 1996. Friends was produced by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. The season contains 25 episodes and concluded airing on May 15, 1997.

Phoebe is stalked by a man named Malcolm who mistakes her for her identical twin, Ursula. Phoebe then tries to help Malcolm to get over Ursula. Ross and Rachel give Chandler "boyfriend" lessons, one of which ultimately backfires on Ross. Monica copes with her break-up with Richard by making jam, and then considers having a baby by artificial insemination through a sperm bank. Joey's arm is in a sling after hurting his shoulder jumping on the bed. (Matt LeBlanc dislocated his shoulder in the previous episode, which was written into the plot).

The series narrative follows six friends living and working in New York City: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing, and Ross Geller played by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer respectively. All episodes were filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. The fourth season finale, "The One with Ross's Wedding", however, was filmed on location in London, UK in front of a British studio audience.[1]

This episode, which is entitled "The One with the Race Car Bed," begins with each character's internal dialogue. When Gunther goes to drop coffee off for the friends, he marvels at the fact that Ross is dating Rachel.

The final episode of Friends wouldn't have been complete without Gunther getting one last opportunity to annoy Ross. As Rachel is about to leave for Paris, Ross decides to finally admit that he's still in love with her.

In the season three episode "The One With The Giant Poking Device," Monica memorably bumps Ben's head while playing with him, after which Ben appears to keep repeating the incriminating phrase, "Monica bang!"

In their original contracts for the first season, the main cast were paid $22,500 per episode.[13] The cast members received different salaries in the second season, ranging from $25,000 to $40,000 per episode, with Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer being the highest paid.[13][14] Prior to their salary negotiations for the third season, the cast decided to enter collective negotiations, despite Warner Bros.' preference for individual deals.[15] The main cast were paid $75,000 per episode for the third season, $85,000 for the fourth, $100,000 for the fifth, and $125,000 for the sixth.[16] They received $750,000 per episode for the seventh and eighth seasons, and $1 million per episode for the ninth and tenth seasons.[17] The cast also receive syndication royalties beginning with the fifth season.[14]

Rachel Karen Green (Jennifer Aniston) is the spoiled but warm-hearted and likable daughter of Dr. Leonard Green (Ron Leibman), a rich, Long Island vascular surgeon, and Sandra Green (Marlo Thomas). She has two sisters, Jill (Reese Witherspoon) and Amy (Christina Applegate). Rachel is introduced into the series in the first episode after she leaves her fiancé, Barry Farber, at the altar, and attempts to live independently without financial support from her parents.[e 3] She flees from her almost-wedding to New York City to find Monica Geller, her friend from high school. Rachel moves into Monica's apartment and meets Phoebe Buffay and Joey Tribbiani. Rachel already knows Ross Geller, Monica's brother, as all three attended Lincoln High School. In the first episode, she is also reacquainted with Chandler Bing, Ross's college buddy; however, later episodes retcon this, and she is shown to have met Chandler on Thanksgiving, whilst Ross was at college. Rachel's first job is as a waitress at Central Perk coffee house. She later begins to work in fashion, becoming an assistant buyer, and later a personal shopper, at Bloomingdale's. She eventually becomes a buyer at Polo Ralph Lauren. 041b061a72
